Duncan Hospital, Raxaul is one of the units of Emmanuel Hospital Association in Bihar. Established in 1930, and now it is a 200 bedded hospital.

The hospital has a Community Health and Development Program which was started in 1986 and we have been working mainly in 3 blocks of Raxaul, Adapur and Ramgarwa in East Champaran district of Bihar.

Current Projects under the Community Health and Development program are:

  1. Mental Health Project
  2. Community Based Rehabilitation project for Persons with Disabilities including Spinal Cord Injury
  3. Non-Communicable Disease project (Cancer, Hypertension, Blood pressure and Diabetes)
  4. Invisible girls project (Girls Education)
  5. Nyaya Kendra project (Rescuing, prosecuting and restoring of sex trafficking and bonded labour)
  6. Safe village (Awareness on trafficking)
  7. Young Women & Adolescent Mental Health (Skills training and Mental Health education)

Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Project:

CBR project is one of the projects working with Person with Disabilities since 2003, to enable People with disabilities live Healthy, achieving their maximal functional potential in mobility, self-care, and in vocation and live a dignified life. We serve in 3 administrative blocks (Adapur, Raxaul and Ramgarwa) of east Champaran district, Bihar

The program is supervised by a multidisciplinary team. We have 2 community field staff, 1 Project assistants, 2 CBR workers, 1 special educator and 1 project manager. With support of hospital, we also have 1 occupational therapist and 2 physiotherapists in the team.

The program does the following activities:

  1. Early identification and intervention with children identified in the hospital and communities.
  2. Rehabilitation services are provided for PWDs at the outpatient’s department. These services include various assessments, planning therapy, giving home program and providing aids and appliances and home modifications, and referral and follow up services by CBR project.
  3. Children with disabilities (6-18) year old have learning opportunities and enhance their academics, behavioural, communication, fine/gross motor, and activities of daily living. By integrating into school/special school and Non formal education.
  4. Disabled People Groups (DPGs) are empowerment and work towards addressing their own common issues.
  5. Networking to provide services for people with disabilities with Govt. and NGOs.
  6. Some of the programs especially for person with Spinal Cord Injured are organising mela once in a year, facilitate medical surgery, therapy exercise and wheelchair through collaboration.
