Major HPS Ahluwalia is the Founder and Chairman of Indian Spinal Injuries Centre since 1995. He is an Indian mountaineer, author, social worker and retired Indian Army officer. He has also been the Chairman of The Indian Mountaineering Foundation. In recognition of his unique contribution to society, the Government of India awarded Major Ahluwalia the country’s highest honours – the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award. The President of India has also conferred the National Award for Best Work in the Field of Disability on him, for his humanitarian efforts and tireless service for the welfare of persons with disabilities.

Indian Spinal Injuries Centre is the most advanced Spine, Orthopedic and Neuromuscular Surgical centre in India with the latest state of the art diagnostics and surgical equipment and a highly qualified team of specialists recognized internationally who have been trained in leading institutes of India and abroad.

The foundation stone of the hospital was laid by Rajiv Gandhi (Former late Prime Minister of India) in the year 1989. ISIC is sprawled over 15 acres of land with a covered building area of 20,000 square meters, ISIC provides a world class medical management, comprehensive rehabilitation, research and training. The hospital has 200 beds, state of the art intensive care units, six operation theaters backed by latest diagnostic and treatment facilities, 24 hour ambulance and emergency facilities.

It has a team of dedicated, internationally trained & acclaimed spine surgeons providing cutting edge medical & surgical technology. The spine service provides comprehensive management of spinal injury, back pain, spinal deformities, tumors, osteoporosis etc. Motion preserving spine surgeries including disc replacement & dynamic fixation, minimally invasive spine surgery including endoscopic disc excision, minimally invasive pedicle screw fixation & decompression, percutaneous kyphoplasty, thoracoscopic / laproscopic fusion & advanced pain & spasticity management techniques like intrathecal  baclofen pump implantation are some of the cutting edge surgical technologies practiced at the centre. The latest addition to our technological advancement is the introduction of Spine Robotics. Robotics, the most recent advancement in spine surgery is a specialized approach to a complex procedure that allows planning a surgery and facilitates highly accurate and predictable execution of the plan.

At ISIC, it is our continuous endeavour not only to treat spinal cord injuries but to enable the injured people live with dignity and self-reliance. To spread the message ISIC observes 5th September as the Spinal Cord Injury Day. ISIC organises a unique inclusive rally to create awareness about Spinal cord injuries and to present the lively side of the injured people that we hope will motivate others living in similar situation. We are also working relentlessly towards creating a conducive environment for the people who have suffered spinal cord injury as well as in creating awareness among people to prevent the spine from being injured. We are and will work to spread awareness on how injuries to spine can be prevented, kinds of spinal injuries, the dos and don’ts for first responders in case of a suspected spinal injury, and curative options available that can change a survivor’s life.

Having the emphasis on self reliance some of the additional services provided at ISIC includes; Home and Car modification, Wheelchair Skills training, Assistive Technology and Counseling and Psychology.
